CBN bans use of naira debit cards overseas

CBN
THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday ordered commercial banks to stop customers from using their debit and credit cards outside the country.
Following the latest development, banks are beginning to communicate the apex bank’s directive to customers through emails, noting that it is a “temporary measure”.
The directive, which takes effect from January 1, 2016, will no doubt affect access to foreign online retailers. The measure is seen as part of Federal Government’s efforts to obstruct the flow of foreign exchange out of the country following the intense pressure on the naira in the past week, crossing an all time high of over N280 to the dollar.

Controversial SA pastor who makes his congregation eat snakes, beaten, his church burnt down

Controversial South African pastor, Penuel Mnguni, of the End Time Disciples Ministries was beaten up by some angry South African youths in Mmakaunyane Village in the North Western part of South Africa last week Sunday November 15th. During the attack, the youths burnt down his church and tied him and a member of his church up with rope.
Penuel, who is known for engaging in strange practices such as asking his congregation to eat grass, strip naked and swallow live snakes, had been lying low for sometime after a mob led by South African vigilante group, the Economic Freedom Fighters, burnt his church at Soshanguve in Tshwane. He had tried setting up his church again inside a bush in Mmakaunyane community but was caught.

The tent of his church was burnt down by the angry youths while he and some of his church members were beaten and tied up. Police officers fortunately came to their rescue.

Resident Johanna Baloyi said the pastor and his congregation were not allowed in their area. “How can a person eat a rat and claim it tastes like chocolate? That’s evil!” A church member who was protecting her pastor said they have the right to attend any church they wanted. She said the rats have healed and saved them from suffering.

Suicide bombers killed 12 in Adamawa village

Twelve persons were on Saturday night killed when two female suicide bombers attacked Dar village in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The two suicide bombers were suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.

In the incident, residents told newsmen that the two suicide bombers, who detonated Improvised Explosive Devices they had strapped on themselves killed 12 persons including three children.

The spokesperson for the Adamawa Police Command, DSP Othman Abubakar, confirmed the incident. He, however, said that eleven persons were killed in the attack, adding that three houses were burnt while many of the wounded were receiving treatment at a hospital in Yola.

But a former administrator of Madagali Local Government, Maina Ularamu, insisted that 12 people excluding the suicide bombers were killed.

He was quoted as saying that suspected Boko Haram fighters had invaded the village at about 8.30pm on Saturday night shooting at fleeing residents.

He explained that the villagers ran into the bush for safety.

But unknown to them, the two female suicide bombers, who disguised as members of the community, joined the fleeing residents in a crowded safe location in the bush where they detonated the IEDs.

“The suicide bombers were blown up while 12 villagers were killed and many others were injured.

“Residents had fled to the bush and after a moment, two women who disguised as fleeing locals blew themselves up at a crowded place in the bush while the gunmen shot at survivors. So far, 12 corpses have been found,” the former council boss said.

Boko Haram militants have been launching attacks on villages since Madagali was liberated from the grip of Boko Haram sect by Nigerian troops in February.

Consequently, residents had been calling for deployment of soldiers in surrounding villages and forest believed to be the hideouts of the terrorists.

Military authorities in Yola could not be reached for comment as of the time of filing this report.

This is the Afrobeat  season. For weeks across the world,  fans of the late  Fela Anikulapo-Kuti have been celebrating what they call ‘Felabration’. But there is a forgotten  icon that will not be remembered by Fela’s fans, yet, without him, the late musician would have been unknown. Deputy Editor Adewale Adeoye digs up the file of Fela’s grandfather,  the man who gave Africa some of today’s most celebrated melodies.

Meet The First Nigerian Musician To Release An Album (photo)

It is practically impossible to know Nigeria’s first singer because singing has always been part of the human culture from time immemorial but the first ever Nigerian to release an album is Canon Josiah Jesse Ransome Kuti (Fela Anikulapo’s Grandfather and Prof Wole Soyinka’s great-grand father).

Fire Kills Family Of Seven In Lagos Apartment

Tempers flared on Wednesday on Obele Lawanson Community, Surulere, Lagos, after a family of seven died in a fire disaster.

Our correspondent was told that the victims, who lived on 23, Michael Ogun Street, died because their co-tenants did not make effort to rescue them when they called out for help around 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Those killed were a textile material dealer, 28-year-old Kelechi Onoja; his wife, 18-year-old Nkiru; their one year and eight months old first child, Favour; their three weeks unnamed second baby boy; two yet-to-be-identified family members; and Nkiru’s 80-year-old mother.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the only survivor was six-year-old Chidinma, a relative, who sustained burns injuries to her face and hands.

Our correspondent gathered that Nkiru had just given birth to her baby and her mother had visited for the Omugo rites, a popular Igbo culture of a mother nursing her daughter’s baby.

She was said to be preparing to return on Wednesday with the two unnamed ladies she brought with her, when tragedy struck.

The landlord of the house was late, while his immediate son lived in the Ijesha area.

The landlord’s grandson, Abdul Jelili, who lives opposite the apartment, said, “I was sleeping when I heard a noise and quickly rushed out. I saw smoke coming out of their apartment and quickly got a stick, with which I broke their toilet window.

“Smoke billowed out, but I did not hear any movement in the house and could not tell if anybody was in. All the tenants in the other apartments did not come out, so I had to rush out to call for help.”

Another resident, Ejike Okpara, explained that the neighbours did not help because there was animosity among the five tenants in the house.

He said Nkiru had been accused of not greeting the other tenants, among other issues, which had caused series of fight in the neighbourhood.

He said, “So, when the fire began, the neighbours from both sides did not come out. When they finally came out, it was to rescue their families.”

But a tenant, Uzor Alajemba, said he had to first rescue his family when he heard someone raise the alarm.

PUNCH Metro learnt that youths and other members of the community eventually mobilised to the scene to combat the inferno.

A man, who claimed to be part of the rescue, Chima Dimkpa, explained that the burglar-proof bars made rescue difficult.

It was learnt that the grandma had used a candle light to bathe the baby in the night, and forgot to put it off.

Our correspondent was told that after burning out, the fire ignited the table and engulfed the room. The 80-year-old woman was burnt to death.

Kelechi, who had also woken up with other members of the family, reportedly called for help.

He was said to have held tightly to the two sisters, while his wife carried their boy in her hand. They were burnt to death together.

Dimkpa said, “We could have rescued them but for the bars. Everything was smoking hot and untouchable, including the wall.”

A landlord on Ade Close, whose house shared a fence with the apartment, told PUNCH Metro the fire could have escalated, but for the support of his tenants.

The man, who did not identify himself, said he mobilised his tenants to fight the flames from the roof.

A security guard, Desmond Mazeli, explained that officials of the Federal Fire Service arrived at the scene around 2am on Wednesday, adding that the lone survivor was taken out through the window.

Mazeli said no one knew the victim was in the toilet, until she coughed and was quickly rescued by the firefighters.

He said, “I used a neighbour’s car to convey her to a private hospital in our area, while somebody called the Lagos State Emergency Ambulance Service.

“At about 3am, the ambulance arrived, together with policemen from the Area C command. She was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital.”

Our correspondent observed as some friends and family members of the deceased, who got the news on Wednesday, broke down in tears.

Kelechi’s elder sister, Obioma Onoja, said she was only told there was a fire outbreak in the house, but not that her brother’s family was involved.

She said, “I got a call this morning that there was a fire outbreak in their house. I did not know the whole family was dead.”

Nkiru’s brother, Michael Awuzie, said they had arranged to see the family on Sunday for the child’s christening.

Awuzie wondered why it was only their apartment that was affected, adding that the police needed to investigate.

He said, “Mama went to the market yesterday in preparation to leave for the village today (Wednesday) with the foodstuffs for the Omugo.

“It was to announce to the villagers that her daughter had given birth and she had brought the foodstuffs as a proof of the good news. And now, they have all died.”

The traditional leader of the Surulere area, Kareem Awoyemi, said he could not believe that the neighbours deserted the victims when they called for help.

Awoyemi said, “I still don’t understand it. Are people not living in this house?”

Our correspondent learnt that the deceased’s charred remains had been handed over to the police, who had deposited them in a morgue.

The spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, South-West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “ The cause of the fire is yet to be known.”

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency responded to 12 fire disasters over the night, explaining that there was a need for increased vigilance among residents.

“We are still at a loss over why the casualty was that high because the fire itself was not that severe.

“The kitchen was not affected, so nobody can explain why it was that serious,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Joe Offor, confirmed the incident.

He added that the police had taken the corpses to a morgue

SA Pastor Prays Snake Spirit Into Members, Then Sends Them To Nigeria - Pics

The man of God commanded the sheep to come to the front and he started demonstrating power through them. He first commanded the spirit of a snake to enter into them and commanded the spirit to show its character in them. They started moving like snakes and behaving like snakes. He then sent them to go to Nigeria and they started to speak like Nigerians.
He further demonstrated by sending them into the water and commanded them to swim. They all started swimming and behaving like the different creatures living under the sea. He then turned them into sheep and they started bleating like goats making sounds as if they were goats.

He turned one of them into a horse, climbed on top of him, and turned his head to become his feet and he stood on his head with his legs up. He took them to the church next to the bridge and one of them manifested saying “We must tell people that Prophet Penuel is the one causing accidents at Moloto Road.”

After taking them to the church he turned them into statues, he then commanded them to speak in different languages that no one can understand, and some even spoke in Chinese. The last demonstration was when he commanded them to sleep and hit one woman on her back. The man of God woke her up and asked her if she felt any pain, she responded by saying that she felt no pain. These are indeed the works of the Almighty, Christ the Unknown mystery of God. It takes the Holy Spirit for one to understand these works, mysteries that are unknown.
